Gerald I don’t think that the tone of your interventions is welcome here.
I thought you were done arguing? Mr. Green
If so then… You can leave the topic. The Grand Seiko Guy - Page 4 Blunt_gi Thank you.

What the fuck ?!?

People were complaining that I didn’t continue the discussion publicly.

Damned if I do, and damned if I don’t.

    What’s a guy to do?

C’est peut être ton avis mais ce n’est pas le mien.

It’s your opinion but not mine

    Just on this…

It would be remiss of me not to recognise that my coming here and discussing/debating/arguing in English is less than ideal.

In an ideal world, we Brits would not be so damn lazy and expect everyone else to speak our language, and perhaps if I’d made a little effort beyond the age of 16 -when I sat my French O level and passed with flying colours – I would be able to have this conversation in French.

However, I’m a damn lazy Brit so no chance of that.

Regardless of the swings and roundabouts of the discussion itself, I am extremely grateful that you are all kind enough to actually engage with me when I write in English.

There is a lot more here than just an argument about whether GS ever made black dial watches. I am also frequently finding myself having to defend against assumptions and presentation of my motives, character and decisions that, quite frankly, are out of order. It would be so much easier if those assumed and false allegations were to simply stop.

    Kind regards,

    Gerald.

Gerald: We like the argued points of view even opposite and even in English.

La collection de malade! Mr. Green

So Thegrandseikoguy, may I ask why do you sell your GS collection? Did you lost interest in this brand, or in watches?

    http://forums.timezone.com/index.php?t=msg&goto=737794&rid=5916#msg_737794

Rolling Eyes

    FINALLY!

Thank you. Thank you very much. You absolutely may ask why I’m doing this.

Someone actually asks me the question, rather than just bitching from the sidelines about the decision I have made.

Have I lost interest in the brand, or in watches? Heck no. My interest in vintage Grand Seiko has never been higher. Just a week or so back, I actually flew to Tokyo for just 48 hours – solely for the purpose of seeing a collection that isn’t even for sale. And do you think if I’d lost interest in the brand I would have put all that effort into documenting watches that I don’t even have available for sale?

Why am I selling my GS collection?

    Well, there are two reasons.

Firstly – I need to make a living, like all of us do. I believe that there is a living to be made buying and selling vintage Grand Seiko. Why? Because I’ve sat back and watched as some of the pieces in my collection have more than tripled in value since I purchased them. Because I have been inundated with people approaching me asking for advice on what to buy, and where to buy it. And you would be very surprised to know the background of some of these people. Crucially, I don’t see that things are going to slow down – quite the opposite. I think things are just getting started.

Having spent a considerable amount of time, effort and money over the past couple of years on learning about, and purchasing, vintage Grand Seiko’s, I believe I’m in a very good position to capitalise on that investment. Just for some context – when I was « just »collecting, I would spend at least 2 hours every single day hunting for watches, keeping an eye on the market, and researching.

Secondly – I guess I’ve reached a stage in my life as a collector where I realise I don’t actually have to permanently own every single watch I ever purchase.

I’m actually happy owning something temporarily – be that for a week, a month, or a year – and then letting it go. Because what happens when I let it go? It releases more money to go and buy more vintage Grand Seikos. Even if it’s just – as in an example that is about to happen – selling one piece to replace it with another example of the same reference that is in better condition than the one I sold.

For me, this is a win-win. I can devote my time, energy and finances towards my passion, make a living from it, and continually improve the collection that I own at any point in time. Right now – today – I own some pieces that I would probably never have had the opportunity to purchase were it not for the fact that I commenced dealing.

And you know what? I’m fine with some people thinking I am literally the spawn of the devil for « changing » from being a « collector » to being a « dealer ». But frankly, you show me a single collector who has more than a dozen watches who has never sold something. I’m just doing it in a totally open and transparent way.

    Kind regards,

    Gerald.

    ——————————————————–

Ok, one last message concerning this whole deal.

Yes, I was surprised that Gerald went from collector to dealer. But now he says clearly that he wants to capitalise, make a living out of it and so on, ok, great, there’s money to be made there indeed. So he is a professional watch dealer. And I think that his price positioning is to high, that’s it.
Whether it’s a watch lover that sells his collection or a collector deciding to become a profesionnal watch dealer, I consider it to be tow different things. If he says openly that his goal is to make a living out of his passion, at least now things are clear. He has a commercial approach, which I understand better now. All he had to do was to say so at the very beginning, it would have avoided all the misunderstandings.
Of course, it doesn’t take anything away from all the hours he spent researching and sharing information.
