« »Super Titanium » is made from solid titanium. While solid titanium has excellent hypoallergenic properties, its softness makes it particularly difficult to process. At CITIZEN, we applied our mastery of processing to develop unique technologies that overcome the challenges posed by solid titanium. « Duratect » is CITIZEN’s proprietary technology for hardening the surfaces of watch parts. The human arm is the part of the body we move most. As such, watches are most exposed to the risk of being scratched or bumped. We want your watch to stay pristine and beautiful for as long as possible. That was the thinking behind the birth of « Duratect ». In simple words, by processing solid titanium and applying « Duratect », we called the material as « Super Titanium ».
You may see the stamping on the case or bracelet, it mentions « base titanium ». As the hardening technology, « Duratect » may change the surface color of titanium, we state « base titanium » to avoid any unnecessary misunderstanding. »

- Types of Surface Finishings
DURATECT α (Alpha)
DURALATECT’s new technology, the highest peak, protects from scratches with its overwhelming hardness of 2,000 Hv or higher. More than twice as hard as the conventional DURALATECT TIC/PTIC. By coating with a material that does not contain precious metals, it is not only scratch-resistant but also gentle to the skin.DuraTect TIC
Hard coating (titanium carbide) is applied using IP (ion plating) technology to harden the surface. It is mainly used for titanium products, taking advantage of its titanium color tone.Duratect PTIC
DuraTect TIC is further coated with platinum, a precious metal. By controlling its thickness while maintaining high hardness, beautiful color tones of platinum and color tones equivalent to stainless steel are realized. It is mainly used for high-end and women’s products.Duratect GOLD
Coating of gold and alloy compounds on a titanium nitride film using our proprietary IP (ion plating) technology.DuraTect DLC
Abbreviation of « Diamond-Like Carbon, » which is hard to peel off and has excellent durability. The black color with beautiful gloss and smooth texture are the features of this product.Duratect DLC Blue
Abbreviation for Diamond-Like Carbon, which is resistant to peeling and highly durable. The smooth touch and feel of DuraTect DLC is maintained, and a unique deep blue color is achieved.DuraTect MRK
The titanium material is infiltrated with nitrogen and oxygen from the surface to harden the surface of the material. This material is used in sports watches used in harsh environments.DuraTect DLC/MRK
DLC (carbon hard coating) is applied to titanium material whose surface is hardened by gas hardening technology.Duratect α/MRK
This technology is a combination of « MRK » gas hardening technology and « DuraTect α ». By overlaying a hard film on the hardened material surface, further scratch resistance is achieved, as well as excellent metal allergy resistance.Duratect
DuraTect, a surface hardening technology originally developed by Citizen, is applied to protect the original brilliance and beauty of the finish of the watch.
*Some parts of the watch do not have DuraTect coating.Platinum White Titanium
The surface of the titanium material is coated with pure platinum using Citizen’s patented « titanium (dry) surface treatment (ion plating) » technology. This process achieves the beautiful luster that only platinum can provide, while maintaining the same softness to the skin.
