- Hublot plans standalone stores across the Gulf
By Robert Ditcham, Staff ReporterDubai: Luxury Swiss watchmaker Hublot will roll out a series of standalone stores throughout the GCC, the latest step in the company’s recent rise to regional prominence.
The company will open its first store in Dubai’s Wafi City mall in October, selling 60-80 pieces in its Big Bang collection. Prices range from Dh36,000 for a steel encased model to a staggering Dh3.67 million ($1 million) for a watch containing 493 diamonds.
The Wafi store will be followed by outlets in Abu Dhabi, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar. Hublot officials are targeting five openings by 2009.
Hublot has been present in the GCC for some time and in Dubai since 1982, selling through Ahmad Seddiqi & Sons. However, Hublot officials admit the company did not fully exploit the potential of the GCC market until the present CEO, Jean-Claude Biver, took charge in 2004.

New concept
"When I took over, I brought a new concept to the brand. Today the name is still the same, but that’s all that remains of the original company," Biver told Gulf News.
"Earlier, we were sleeping in this region. We were selling maybe 12 watches a year – now we are selling more than 10 watches a day in the GCC. This represents 27 per cent of our global turnover."
Biver said the company’s Dh700 million turnover is hampered by production speed at its Switzerland factory.
"We have Dh1 billion in orders. There is a waiting list which can go up to one year for certain models," he said.
