Nice article, but there never really was a Jacques Cousteau Rolex ‘mystery’ to solve….

What was found is that, among many, many diving and non-diving wristwatches that Jacques-Yves Cousteau wore during his life (some of which he was associated with the development), the man happened to wear a submariner and a daydate at some point.

The article, although nice, is very partial, as it leads uninformed persons to believe that Rolex watches had an important role in the Cousteau history, which they did not have (Blancpain or Omega, that would be a different story, but Rolex definitively not).

So, no mystery solved this time, but a few anecdotal nice pictures and a nice text

I believe Rolex watches DID play an important rolex in Cousteau history.

Could you elaborate on that ?
It is likely that Cousteau liked to wear Rolex watches for his personal use, as many people did and do, but AFAIK, and until some elements are brought forward, he did not use the watches ‘professionally’, nor participated to the development of Rolex watches, unlike what he did with Blancpain and Omega.

I am not discounting Blancpain, Omega or Doxa because I think they are all fine watches, but I write a blog about Rolex History.

Of course I know that. And you do it well with lots of good research.
However, here, we are more in the ‘people facts’ that in the ‘history’, that was my point.
So, a good anecdote to share with Rolex-addicts, yes, a ‘scoop’, or ‘one of the most significant Rolex History stories to be told’, as you present it, well…

    Warmest regards too,

    Cda

    Hi CDA,

You seem to be completely missing the point!?!

My point is that people in the past speculated about wether or not Jacques Cousteau wore a Rolex Submariner or not, but nobody ever proved, with photographic evidence that he did–until now with the article I wrote. That is specifically the mystery that has been solved, once and for all.

You asked me why I said: "I believe Rolex watches DID play an important role in Cousteau history."

Because he and his two son’s and grandson all wore Rolex Submariner’s. Jacques in particular was inspired enough to wear a very early mid-1950s Rolex Submariner which seems important to me as a Rolex Historian.

CDA, or whatever your name is? My question is why do you even write what you write in the Rolex forum about what I am writing? I am trying to get this story done so I can share it with the Rolex collectable community and you are in the French Rolex forum hazing (trolling) me for no apparent reason!?!

The time it takes going back and forth could be spent bringing the world more valuable Rolex history which is my goal.

I hope I answered your question, which does not really seem like a question.

    Warmest regards,

    Jake

    Hi km’rol,

It is just ironic to me that I am being questioned by a fellow FAM forum member in the Rolex forum about why I am writing a story about a huge Rolex History Story!?!

It is a profound irony in my mind that I am trying to celebrate one of the greatest Frenchmen in history (in the French Rolex forum) and somebody is questioning my integrity.

For the record I think that Jacques Cousteau is probably the greatest explorer that ever lived, or certainly one of them and he has been a superb role model to so many people on so many different levels.

For me as a Rolex fan/fanatic, I am extremely inspired to see my ultimate role model (Jacques Cousteau) wearing my favorite overall Rolex (Submariner). For me, this is the most exciting story I think I have ever worked on!!!!!!!!!!!!

    ;-)))))))))))))))))))))

    Jake, good job Impec

    Well, Jake,

First, thank you (and also to Km’rol, but I am used to this), for calling me a troll.

May I just remind you that in the past, I have already contributed positively on your very blog to two of your previous ‘history of Rolex’ facts with some not unsignificant pieces of information
    1) highlighting the watch that Sir Hillary took to the top of the Everest (the Smiths), and pointing to the thomasm picture of the watch at the london clockmakers’ museum
    2) pointing to you the role that Jean-Claude Biver had in the creation of the first official James Bond watch product placement

Both times you have acknowledged the input, and used the information that I provided you to complete your topics.
So really, thanks again for calling me a troll, that is very nice of you.

Then, back to Cousteau, my intention was not to be polemic, but just to try to bring the significance of the attribution of Rolex watches to the man to a more reasonable level as far as Rolex history is concerned.
So far, I have not been convinced by your essay that the association of Cousteau and Rolex is nothing more than a nice anecdote.
I don’t see any problem in telling the Rolex enthusiasts community that you have found a few pictures of Cousteau wearing a Rolex, actually, this is one of these small facts that watch forum members like to discuss, and therefore I don’t think I miss the point. But I think it is dubious to argue, on the sole evidence of a couple of pictures, that Cousteau played any significant part in Rolex history and vice-versa, which is really what your title, and subsequent comments, are about.

    Then, to your question:
"why do you even write what you write in the Rolex forum about what I am writing?"
Well, do you think that you can just come on the French Rolex forum, post the links to your articles each time you write another one, and not accept that people would discuss on what is written in the article? (heard about shilling?)

You call me a troll, but who do you think you are ?

I really did not intend to make this thread naughty, but I guess you have started a fire, and shown your true face with your replies.
You might not be called a troll, and you do put a lot of efforts in your articles, but you are certainly a person who cannot bear any other comments than the applauses you are expecting when publishing your "worldwide first ever published unbelievable true stories on Rolex history".

Sorry, but ForumAmontres is not about linking to peoples blogs, it is about having discussions around watches.

    _primo sur ce qu’il soulève précisement sur cet article;
